Firstly our apologies for the tardiness of this Blog, the Annual Dinner, Christmas, Family and Work all got in the way a little!
So without further ado, let’s dive in!
This tournament was held a little, well a lot later than we normally hold the Cabrera Cup Tournament, the date being on 28th November. The reason, actually the reasons why? Well a shortage of players, hosts and the weather all had a hand in the never ending postponement, such that we thought it might not happen! Fortunately on the last Sunday in November, the sun began to shine, the wind subsided and it was game on, even if we didn’t quite have our normal complement of players.
Introducing the Teams!
The Red Team
The Green Team
The Round Robin fun started at 9.30 and continued through to 13:00 when we broke for lunch, with 4 unfortunate couples having to play after lunch to decide whether they would make it into the semi-finals.
Once again we had some ties amidst the players, namely between David & Marty to determine who was to be No 1 and No 2 Gent and Trish, Jane & Veronica all had the same points for the Green Ladies! Fortunately there were no ties in the Red team, the results were Chantal and Doris as the No 1 and No 2 Lady respectively and David M and Benke as No 1 and No 2 Gent, again respectively.
As we were short on time and light, all ties were resolved by a simple toss of the coin, or should I say a tennis racket, which saw David R become No 1 and Marty No 2 Gent, with Jane the No 1 Lady & Veronica taking the No 2 slot. So our apologies to Trish would really dipped out!
So the results of the Robin Robin and Playoffs were as follows:
The Red Team :
No 1 Lady & Gent : Chantal & David M
No 2 Lady & Gent : Doris & Benke
The Green Team :
No 1 Lady & Gent : Jane & David R
No 2 Lady & Gent : Veronica & Marty
So after a swift juggle by the President, the Semi Finals Draw looked like this….
Each semi-final consisted of 1 set, with sudden death on deuces, with volunteers taking turns as the lines judges!
Everyone gave it their all in both matches, but someone always has to lose, and we saw Jane and David M through to the finals with a 6:3 win over Marty & Doris; and David R & Chantal with a 6:2 win over Benke & Veronica.
And at last, the Final…… so without further ado I introduce ……
The Finalists
With the light rapidly fading and the cold setting in, the spectators valiantly stayed to watch the battle between the two David’s and their partners unfold, and David R & Chantal being the victorious duo, but I am sure I won’t be the only one to say, everyone was more than a little relieved when it came to a conclusion so we could all scuttle back to Lynda & David’s and their roasting fire, to warm up and toast the Runners Up & Winners in style!
The Valiant Runners Ups - David M & Jane
And your Winners of Cabrera Cup 2022 are.....
David & Chantal
Well Sjan & Frank winning the last Tournament, and now David & Chantal, perhaps we need to stop couples teaming up!!
Despite the cold, and the shortness of the day, being late November, a lot of fun was once again had by all on and off the Court, and on behalf of the Club, we would like to thank the Middletons for hosting the lunch and After Tournament Party (again), and Jane, David (& me) for all the organisation, and last but not least all the participants themselves, without which this day would not happen!
Until the Next Time!
